Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Gary Spearin studied art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design earning his BFA, 1981. In 1997 he graduated with his MFA from the University of Guelph. He has been the recipient of numerous Canada Council Grants and Ontario Arts Council Grants. Spearin has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Canada as well as the UK and the United States. His work is found in public and private collections throughout Canada.
Spearin’s multi-media installations of the last two decades utilized painting both on and off the canvas. His repertoire of painting techniques and styles has been employed in the service of issues, to site and to context. More recently a reductive approach has led the artist to focus primarily on painting, while discarding the plethora of materials, issues and context.
