Heather Graham

Graham’s portraits are based on images of anonymous people, photographed from life in contemporary society. The faces are close cropped and enlarged with little external context provided. As a result there is an intimacy and immediacy conveyed, providing insight into a private moment of emotion. Large house brushes are used to eliminate fine surface details, creating an ephemeral, ambiguous effect on the subject. Her shift to larger canvases has lifted constraining restrictions, while the repetition of images creates a calming effect: a reassurance that what has past is not entirely gone.

Graham has been represented by Edward Day Gallery since 2003 and has exhibited nationally for the past six years. Concurrently, she will be exhibiting at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, March 30 – April 30, 2008.
